I see nice digital art and kind of want a tablet but it’s just…. I never did get the hang of drawing.

Maybe if I tried again… That worked for crochet…

But I don’t want to spend $$$ and end up never using the thing.

Just throwing this information out–ultimately up to you to decide if it’s worth it to you to even buy a tablet first.  Even the cheapest ones are a bit pricey if you decide you won’t use it.  If you’ve got supplies you can use for more traditional media right now, you might play around with that first.

But onto tablet info–if you don’t mind the possibility of some initial frustration with driver setup, there are a lot of non-WACOM brand tablets out there that cost less.  Monoprice is one I’ve tried personally and can vouch for–I’ve also tried the ArtisulD13 (it’s the one I use as a main tablet), but a drawing tablet with a monitor in it is not something you’d be looking for both in terms of price and because it’d be overkill XD

I actually like the sensitivity off the off-brand tablets better, they tend to have a wider range than WACOM in my experience which has been good for me because I don’t like to press really hard when I draw.  No matter how much I fiddled with settings I always had to press hard on WACOM tablets to get results.

WACOM drivers don’t tend to have as many issues with installation, but you pay for the brand.  The Monoprice I have didn’t give me any issues, but the Artisul is a nightmare every time I have to connect it to a new system.  So … there’s a bit of luck involved with the off-brand ones.

I have heard the driver horrors from art friends, believe me. XD

I never felt comfortable practicing with traditional media because my income has always been low and it felt wasteful. Maybe digital would be less stressful from a waste standpoint.

I don’t know. It’s probably best to not, really. A tablet might help with photo retouching, though.

I hear you on the waste thing.  I’ve only become more comfortable using materials more recently, as I’ve gained disposable income.  I have a set of prismacolor pencils I bought in HS with birthday or christmas money I still haven’t even half used up (I am 31 for a time reference) because I was afraid of using them up.

That said, for practice if you’ve got any scrap paper you might try out ball point pens.  They’re one of my favorite things to use and can be obtained pretty cheaply.  You can start with pencil if you feel like you need to be able to erase.

So, what’s the doll you desperately have to have someday? One that you’d spend a million dollars on? Reblog with the name or picture!

Mine was Amadiz Studio  Yolande, but I’m actually getting him soon!!

I’ve achieved a couple of long-time wants (SDC Arashi, Unoa Sist, and in theory my Saint is being made but you never know with Dollshe), but I think the only two dolls I would really scramble for now if they came up are Jun Tachibana (the original has the most charm, but I’d love to get a graffiti girl too–sadly the recent one-off has a faceup I just can’t get into, and I wouldn’t want to wipe a one-off) and a Unoss with the sculpted eyebrows still on. I don’t need the lashes, although I’d keep them if I found a head with them, for sheer rarity, but she’d have to have the brows. I love those things.

Runner up: School A (thanks @resinpunk for continuing to fuel that flame)

Sorry not sorry.

ALLOW ME TO ONE-UP MY FANNING.  Jun totally works with School A.  Just saying.

Edit - wrong blog but oh well.

For Sale: OceanMoon Shou-Ryu

resinpunk:

Probably the last one I’m going to manage to shave off my collection, but I’ve got two of these and in the interest of shrinking the collection, one of them needs to go.

I will be sending him with the faceup he has, although it’s done by myself so I wouldn’t consider it professional.  It was one of my let’s experiment with paints faceup, so the detail lines are done in acrylic paint rather than watercolor pencil.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, @caseyabjd.  (As a bonus I actually have step-by-step photos of painting him, if you’re curious – http://casey.resinpunk.net/post/105835565029/faceup-walkthrough-8-ocean-moon-shou-ryu )

I am asking $100 USD not including shipping, but will consider offers/trade offers.

He matches my old pureskin normal volks bodies perfectly, but will not match a newer one (it will be pinker and a bit more pale).

Head has sold!  Thank you to everyone who shared the post :)

Weiiird.

I have only just noticed that one of the Crobidoll R-Line bodies I have has two of the same leg ._o  I think the right one, but I’m honestly not good at right vs left.

At first I thought I probably just confused the legs between the two bodies and that the other one must just have both of the other side legs on.  But nope.  Right and left leg on that one.

Both of these bodies were straight from Crobidoll too.  One I bought, one I traded for from someone in person who was the first buyer.  This does explain some things, but now it’s going to bother me that I can’t really fix this XDDD

Honestly it’s hard to tell at a casual glance.  What eventually convinced me I wasn’t imagining is that the ankle joint slopes so it’s a bit longer on one side.  They both slope to the same side.  (Compared to the other body, where they slope to opposite sides)

I already broke my resin ban for the year OTL

… but what a great opening blog post.

I always wanted a mini school A ;^;

… now I just have to figure out his name.  And get him a permanent wig.

– Casey

Just a reminder that I’ll be posting on a shared blog now.  So if you still want to see whatever doll content I post, you should follow it!

Been absent.

I’m still alive tho!  Just thought I’d say.

Also wanted to note that @saarsyshe and I decided to move our doll site over to a tumblr blog, so I surrendered the resinpunk username to it.

Not very creative, so I just went for resinpunk2 for this blog….

This blog probably isn’t going to get updated very much more I don’t think?  I’ll probably be moving doll content to the shared @resinpunk now.

And that’s all for the PSA.

Working on getting a look together for this guy.  I think he still needs something, specifically I’d like to add some more teal in to bring out his eyes.

Hmmm … not sure how to go about it, though.

dollgirls:

@resinpunk yikes i am so sorry to hear that! i had a patch on my right palm that just wouldn’t go away, and it was one of the really ugly ones that had tiny fluid bubbles too (tmi i know sorry)

i know what food allergens exacerbate my condition so i managed to somehow calm it down after staying really hydrated, avoiding milk n eggs, and applying topical ointment regularly, and just… not poking it? hopefully that does something for you ;-;

blech i think at some point i just wanna get tatted up to cover all the skin discoloration i have but what happens your eczema flares up when your tattoo is healing?? mystery

Ugh, yeah, that’s pretty much what I got.  The little blisters under the skin.  I think mine was irritation from hand washing … :/

Fairithilien and her restringing technique. Imagine if this was your limited DC doll? And she does this to her commissions? When most faceup artists won’t even touch a doll without gloves there is this person. And people bitch about pintsizedpalace? This is cringe worthy at best..

Calm yourself my friend. My feet were cleaned well, only thing “dirty” about them is chipped nail polish I promise. They did not touch the doll itself either, only the elastic. Please feel free to inform me of a better way to stretch the elastic enough to actually fit another piece of elastic though the super tiny space in the chest of a DC doll, I would love to hear it. I tried everything and this was a last ditch effort that I shared with discord due to us all laughing about the struggle that is restringing DC anything earlier. Every method I found to do this just said “use your feet if you don’t have a friend to help” so that’s what I did.
Sorry it distressed you. I would love to hear suggestions for a better method, because I tried everything else I could do to make it work to no success.

Also I have used my clean feet to restring dolls for years because that’s what you do when you need other hands and don’t have them.

If the feet are clean, who cares how it looks?

@ithilienbjd I find the photo funny :)

lmao it’s not like you’ll be touching the elastic when you hold the doll so what does it matter.

i love this omg. best restringing ever.

That is a fantastic idea and I need to remember this.

Not that I’ve ever restrung that particular doll body, but I have strung tinies doing this:

I string the arms on first to hold that elastic in place.  Then for the body string I loop ribbon through and poke a bamboo skewer through the end, then I use the skewer to manipulate it through any tight spots like that.  (For instance, for whatever reason I like my body string to be behind the arm string, and that always requires the aid of a bamboo skewer to manipulate.)

… I’ve also been known to use gravity (e.g. I’ll string the doll upside down) and looping elastic around already strung bits (leg loop around an arm or neck if I’ve got enough give) to aid in stringing by myself.

In the past I’ve also used my teeth, but that ended painfully once (though with teeth intact), and I have refrained since.  (Do note the teeth was only ever with my own dolls.)

Edit–also, in a pinch I have used the shoestrings from my own shoes to string.  And that is almost certainly dirtier than washed feet.

Thanks for the suggestions! I actually tried all of those first!! The stringing channels on this doll are curved, and the torso is a very tight squeeze for one set of elastic, let alone two, so the skewer method didn’t work, and I couldn’t even fit a pipecleaner past the arm elastic in the torso. I figured out the “stretch out the arm elastic and you can just barely fit the body elastic through” trick after about an hour of troubleshooting and cursing and googling.
But on the plus side she stands and poses beautifully now, when the owner couldn’t get her to even stand before.

Personally I think the feet method is fine, but if it does bother you something that worked for me when I restrung one of those Soom faeries was the wire used for jewelry wrapping.  You have to be careful cause it will dig into your hand, though.  It’s more flexible than the bamboo skewer and depending on the gauge thinner than the pipe cleaner.

I think I’m glad I didn’t own an Ada long enough to need to restring. XD

Lol. Tried those wires too. Only reason I was successful in the end. Took them and stretching the arm elastic to get anything through that torso. Gave me one hell of a blister though. I tried so hard and so many methods but I was left to the final resort of my dirty gremlin “fungis” feet. xP

You definitely get the gold metal for determination XD
